A bacterial infection that has allegedly now killed 10 people, and infected an estimated 300 in Germany has been found in three people in the UK, it has been revealed.
News of the outbreak of Haemolytic uraemic infection, which can result in blood poisoning and kidney problems, is a derivative and complication arising from the E. coli bacteria, was reported last week and is believed to have arisen from a consignment of Spanish cucumbers. The cucumbers themselves originated from 2 farms in Andalucia, however, it is possible that the infection may also have arisen in the packing, transport or storage process.
El Pais reports how Spanish farmers have reacted angrily to the reaction of Germany given that there are a number of links between production and the supermarket shelves : "Germany has been very irresponsible in pointing the finger at a country's entire industry without any proof," said Andrés Góngora, Almería provincial secretary of the farm and ranch umbrella organization COAG.
According to the UK's Health Protection Agency (HPA), there have been no reports of secondary infection here and nothing to suggest that the bug has entered the British food chain.
