The most senior court in Spain has upheld the majority of a charter that proposes new powers of self rule to the region of Catalonia.
The Constitutional court finally been agreed to this after a debate lasting four years, which seems to be a defeat for conservatives, who had argued that the charter essentially undermined the idea of Spain as a unified country.
One of the points in the Charter that has been allowed to remain is that of refering to the Catalan region as a 'nation'.
Although the majority of the charter was upheld, the Catalan regional president objected to any removed points, saying that the charter should have been approved in its entirety. He said Catalan political parties will call protest rallies, and he called on the people of Catalonia to take part.
