Spain has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the first time at the General Assembly held at the UN earlier today.
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is an inter-governmental body, (Previously the UN Commission on Human Rights), and is the main international institution responsible for monitoring human rights issues throughout the world.
Spain's nomination was supported by 177 of the 192 U.N. member nations.
The position carries a term of three years, with no member being allowed to occupy a seat for more than two consecutive terms.
Currently the seats are distributed among the UN's regional areas as follows: 13 for Africa, 13 for Asia, six for Eastern Europe, eight for Latin America and the Caribbean, and seven for Western Europe.
