It is expected that the Prime Minister will announce an increase taxes applied to tobacco in Spain later today. The Government anticipates that a further 1.2 billion Euros can be gained from the increase, which is expected to be introduced to coincide with the new anti-smoking legislation in the new year.
At the moment the Government takes over 8 billion Euros every year in taxes of cigarettes alone, with a percentage of the revenue being dispersed among the regions who apply the tax.
The Government assert that the tax is a further incentive, claiming that such a financial tax is one more reason to cut down or stop.
