The public prosecutor and lawyers representing Spain's ministry of justice will request that the Supreme Court bans all candidates from the new Basque coalition party, Bildu, from standing in the local elections.
EFE reported how justice ministry lawyers will also ask the court to prevent further candidates with no party affiliation from standing due to allegations that they too are represnting an extension of outlawed political party, Batasuna.
Both requests are thought to be based on police reports which have stated that Bildu, a new pro-independence coalition formed in March with two legal parties and pro-independence candidates running without affiliation, is simply a new route in which to get representatives from Sortu to the elections.
As soon as theSpanish prosecutor's office and state lawyers challenge the list of candidates, the Supreme Court will be given two days to make it's decision. If Bildu is banned from taking part in the coming elections the Basque nationalist coalition can appeal to the Constitutional Court, which will then issue a ruling ahead of May 5th, when election campaigning begins.
