Baggage handling strike hits Girona airport

Wed 15th Jun 2011

Baggage handlers at Girona Airport are staging a strike today, which is expected to inconvenience Hundreds of Ryanair passengers travelling with hand luggage. However, the strike will only effect those departing the airport with hold-luggage - those travelling to the airport, and those departing without any hold-luggage will not be affected in any way.

Ryanair's policy for hand luggage at this time remains unchanged at allowing a weight of no more than 10kg, and with dimensions no greater than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.

There is a possibility of the strike continuing until the weekend and as such the airline has advised that passengers check details before leaving for the airport. Provision is being made for passengers with luggage to transfer their flights to an alternative airport, or for a full refund to be made for passengers deciding just to take hand luggage.

The move will no doubt anger Ryanair, who cut services at the airport earlier this year, following the decision of the Incumbent Catalan Regional government not to honour a 5 year contract that had already been signed and agreed.

Ryanair has already started to scale back its operations from the airport by removing five aircraft, closing 18 of the current 64 routes and cutting the frequency of flights on a further routes.
