The President of the Cabildo de El Hierro, together with scientists and volcanologists from the IGN, have called residents of Frontera to a meeting at the Plaza de Tigaday at 20:30 local time, to keep residents updated on recent seismic activity in the el Golfo bay.
Many of the Islands residents have become concerned over the increase of seismic activty off Frontera, on the North Coast of the Island, over recent days. An Earthquake measuring 3.1 on the richter scale was recorded at 07:07 GMT today, following 2 quakes of similar intensity yesterday - all at much shallower depths of between 2.0km - 2.8km. Volcanic activity is currently centred off the opposite side of the island, off the coast of la Restinga.
Furthermore, claims by scientists and other officials made over the last few days seems to have been contradicting themselves. On one hand there have been claims that the Volcanic eruption has decreased, but this has been hastily followed by claims that the mineral content of the magmatic stain has changed and, only this morning, the confirmation of new volcano crater with width of 120mt and a height of 100mt being discovered 300mt under the surface of the ocean. The Youtube clip shows the latest Rapideye satellite clip of the eruption >>>
The meeting is expected to reassure residents and to advise them that the yellow state of alert (rising to red for the community of La Resinga) remains in place.
