Scientists from Spain's National Geographical Institute (IGN) observing seismic activity on the Canary Island of El Hierro have recorded a total of 3 earthquakes over the course of the last 24 hours ( 20.00 hrs Monday to 20.00 hrs Tuesday GMT ).
As in previous days and weeks, the activity was centred in and aroud the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of the town of Frontera on the northern side of the Island.
The magnitudes ranged from 1.6 to 1.8 on the richter scale, with depths being recorded between 21 to 23 kms. This also continues the trend seen since the weekend of decreasing activity, which is now perhaps at it's lowest since the recent earthquake swarm began on the 17th July.
Meanwhile, in the Las Calmas bay area off the coast of La Restinga, on the south of the Island, the underwater volcanic eruptions have continued to produce pyroclastic rocks, although in lesser quantities than seen over recent days.
PEVOLCA have also reported that emissions of carbon dioxide from the vents have declined from 115 tons per day, as recorded a little over 1 week ago, to 60 today.
The Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), today reported that the falling level of emission implies that the pressure of CO2 contained in the magma indcates that the volcanic activity 'should not continue to grow'.
