New law may force Spanish kids to do chores

New law may force Spanish kids to do chores

Children under 18 in Spain will be legally obliged to do household chores "in accordance with their age and regardless of their gender" under a new draft law.

Under the proposed bill, children will have to "participate in family life" and respect "their parents and siblings".

The new draft Child Protection Bill also proposes obligations for minors on the school front. Children would have to "respect school rules" and "study as required". They will have to "maintain a positive attitude about learning".

Kids will also have to "respect their teachers and other staff at education teachers", as well as their fellow students, according to Spain's ABC newspaper.

The draft law, which was approved in the Spanish Parliament last week, does not set out penalties for children who fail to fulfill these requirements, ‘The Local' reported.

Other key elements of the proposed bill include the establishment of a list of known paedophiles who could be banned from working with children.

Schools and companies hiring staff to work with children will have to ask applicants to provide a copy of their criminal record.
