Spanish Unions sources representing AENA employees at Murcia's San Javier Airport were quoted in the Spanish Press yesterday as claiming that the Airport will not close in favour of Corvera Airport.
At least not for the foreseeable future.
It is expected that in a few days time all employees working from the airport will be informed of their duties for the period between October 2015 to March 2016, meaning that even if Corvera does open before that time, the older facility will continue to operate until March 2016 as a minimum.
Of course, this poses the following question : If both airports are to operate for a period at the same time - and that San Javier Employees are to be transferred to Corvera Airport once operational - how can one workforce be expected to operate two airports without compromising levels of safety and efficiency ?
And if Corvera is not likely to be operational until March 2016 it overshoots Regional Secretary for State Rafael Catala's promise that "Corvera Airport will be operational by March 2015" by a nice round 12 months.
