Ryanair yesterday announced the cancellation of their Almeria - Liverpool route due to the the Almeria board of Tourism's refusal to continue to promote the service.
The airline called upon the Tourism Board to provide an explanation to the people of Almeria - which relies heavily on tourism - as to why the decision has been made. Ryanair's Spokesman, Stephen McNamara, estimated that the move could result in the loss of 10'000 British Tourists and around 9 Million Euros per year to the local economy.
McNamara went on to say how the province had wasted 2.8 Million Euros on an expensive and ineffective media campaign, and had rejected Ryanair's offer oif running a campaign jointly in increasing the number of passengers brought to the airport..
He accused the Almeria Tourist Board of wasting money and putting their largest source of revenue at risk.
However, with the distance between the two airports being 'just' 180kms, it is bound to draw speculation that Ryanair is either preparing to consolodate operations at the soon to open Corvera airport in Murcia, or using the threat of this to get it's own way at Almeria.
