As suspected, Wednesday's strike by baggage handlers at Girona Airport went ahead as planned, and continued through Thursday and looks likely to remain in place over the course of the weekend.
Ryanair, the major airline using the airport, has refused to be blackmailed by the action and has contacted passengers to advise them that they can still fly but have two options : Bring hand luggage only, and be compensated if they have already booked and paid for hold luggage, OR, transfer to another flight.
Ryanair's Stephen McNamara said: "Ryanair will not allow the UGT Union to blackmail passengers during the important, busy summer season. "This strike comes at a time of unprecedented unemployment and UGT members, like everyone else in the tourism industry, should be doing their best to promote and encourage air travel, not disrupt it."
Ryanair have advised that they will run a regular update of the situation on their own website.
