A Royal Decree has been passed in Parliament which imposes a legal limit which states that no patient shall be made to wait over 6 months for a surgical procedure.
The Operations specifically mentioned in the decree were cardio-vascular procedures, cataracts, and hip and knee replacements, which have traditionally resulted in the most lengthy waiting times.
The decree will expand over the coming months to impose similar time limits on outpatient consultations and other therapeutic or diagnostic procedures.
A small number of surgical procedures and operations will not be included in the decree; including artificial insemination, emergency treatments, and transplants, as in many cases the issues that effect the exact timing of the procedure may be influenced by factors outside the control of the Hospital.
Waiting lists will also be prioritised to consider the condition of the patient, risk of death or disability, or serious reduction in quality of life.
