The Minister of Culture and Tourism for the region of Murcia, Alberto Cruz, said that last week's announcement by airline Jet2 for the sale of tickets between San Javier airport and Glasgow, Scotland, does not necessarily mean that Corvera airport will not be operational by that time.
"It is clear that at the time that airlines would transfer operations from San Javier to Corvera once operational," he added.
The Minister continued to explain that, "the company simply meant to demonstrate their commitment to serve the region, regardless of which airport they fly into".
Tumbit is sent a number of promotional press releases every week from Jet2, amongst other airlines, and spoke directly to the PR company representing Jet2's interests in Spain.
It was put to them that many holidaymakers and expats alike would be much more likely to fly to the airport of El Altet - some 80km away in Alicante - than purchase a ticket to fly to an unknown airport. For one, airport transfers, car hire and airport parking would need to be arranged in advance for many passengers. Furthermore, growing cynicism amongst the wider public suggests that confidence that Corvera airport will ever open is slipping.
Last week it was reported how the majority shareholder in Corvera airport, SACYR, is trying to force the force the closure of San Javier to ensure the operation of Corvera as soon as possible. With repayments of a 200 Million euro loan to meet the company is anxious to see a return of investment at the earliest opportunity.
Despite the weekly reports of added routes and special offers to an unconfirmed airport in Murcia, Jet2 are still to openly acknowledge the situation between the 2 airports. Further to Tumbit's request that they clarify their position - or at least acknowledge the confusion caused by their 'sitting on the fence' - the airline has yet to comment.
